Maths Update

It has been a very busy half-term in Mathematics as our Year 8 students prepare for their CE exams after the half term break, and our Year 7s prepare for their end of year assessment. Looking beyond these assessments we are also excited about some investigations work that we will be doing after the exams are finished.  To whet your appetite here are some questions from the ‘nrich’ website which is based out of Cambridge University and provides some excellent investigation opportunities as well as insightful texts about Maths, its history and some philosophy as well.

Maths Challenge:

  • Temperature is often measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit. The freezing point of water is 0 degrees C or 32 degrees F. Is there a temperature at which the Celsius and Fahrenheit readings are the same?
  • Scientists often use the Kelvin Scale of temperature, where the freezing point of water is 273.15K and the boiling point of water is 373.15K. Is there a teperature at which Kelvin and Fahrenheit readings are the same?
